However, data is not automatically saved on every RAM chip, as it contains a type of memory called volatile memory, which is erased when the power is turned off. Nevertheless, programs like Google Chrome, Adobe Photoshop, and even the Windows operating system use RAM by initially loading their core files into it. RAM keeps information readily available so the processor can quickly access it and perform urgent operations without having to first access long-term storage. It is one of the essential components in computing.  The information that allows the computer to carry out its most important tasks, such as running applications, accessing websites, and editing documents, is stored in RAM. RAM lets you open programs and files quickly because it makes it easier to locate data in the computer’s short-term memory.

The development of random-access memory (RAM) has continued over the years, with technological advancements leading to the emergence of different types of RAM, including synchronous SDRAM, double data rate (DDR) SDRAM, and more recent innovations. RAM is an essential component of computer systems, providing the volatile memory needed for quick access to data and its processing during active computing tasks.

Computers need RAM because of the processor, as the processor can only handle one task at a time, while our operating system sends multiple tasks at once. So, when a task is being processed by the processor, the other tasks remain waiting for the processor to be available.

Our operating system sends processes from RAM to the processor using different scheduling algorithms such as:

  • First-Come, First-Served
  • Shortest Job Next
  • Priority scheduling, etc.

Random Access Memory For Laptop and Computer is comparable to waiting at the doctor’s office, where the doctor (processor) can examine (process) one patient at a time, while the other patients  wait.
